An independent as your next MP
These first thoughts from a fundamental optimist are my opening move towards a new career aged 72. With enough support, I intend to launch a campaign as an independent candidate for the United Kingdom parliament in 2010. I've had the sort of real (and not unsuccessful) life experience which 90% of our current MPs have not had. I'm well-educated, multilingual, much travelled, broad-minded and the absolute opposite of an ideologue. I believe that prevention is better than cure, that small is beautiful, and that "doing as you would be done by" is the most important recipe for a happy and worthwhile life. I have a range of genuinely radical policy ideas which if adopted would revolutionise our society for the better without destroying it in the process. As an MP I would be available to all constituents on-line; I would vote NOT along party lines but according to my consituents' wishes, excepting ONLY if and when prevented from doing so by my conscience; I would produce an annual report detailing my year's activities as an MP, my voting record, and my successful actions on behalf of my constituents; and I would be very happy to earn an MP's salary without trying to pad my income via dubious expense claims. Would anyone like to hear more ?
